Connellsville fireworks scheduled tonight
CONNELLSVILLE – Support by local businesses, organizations and the private sector will allow fireworks to light up the city skyline. Donations ranging from $25 to $2,000 have filtered into the city over the past several weeks to cover the costs of the display that will take place tonight along the Youghiogheny River.
“It’s going to be a good show,” said councilwoman Judy Keller on Tuesday. “We’re very grateful to those that have contributed to this effort.”
Last month, the city was advised through the Greater Connellsville Area Chamber of Commerce that New Haven Hose Volunteer Fire Company would not be sponsoring the annual event.
Citing past financial losses in connection with the display, the fire company notified the chamber, which had last sponsored the event, that it, too, could no longer subsidize the display.
Keller said contributions immediately began filtering into the city when council announced the city would plan the event if sufficient funding were made available to cover the costs.
“We have already set up a special account for next year’s fireworks display and any remaining money from this year will be put in that account,” she said.
“While several businesses and organizations were very generous this year, they may not be able to contribute the same amount next year.”
Beginning at 8 p.m., Sound Waves, a local disc jockey, will provide musical entertainment at the city plaza.
Keller said Schaefer Pyrotechnics of Strasburg will send the first firework into the air at about 9:45 p.m.
“They’ve promised us a very good show,” she said.
Keller encourages participant s to come early and set up a lawn chair along the riverbank. Restrooms will be available at the East Side Fire Station and at the garage area adjacent to the municipal building.
“There will be no food or beverages sold during the fireworks, so bring a bottle of water,” added Keller.
Rain date for the event is July 4.
