Lower Tyrone supervisors vote for survey on water-line extension

By Jackie Beranek 2 min read

LOWER TYRONE TWP. – The township supervisors agreed Tuesday to have Bankson Engineering Inc. prepare a survey for a water line extension from Regantown in Westmoreland County. Supervisor Chairman Ernie Walters said the survey, not to exceed $5,000, could provide water to a number of township residents.

“We agreed to look into the possibility of extending a water line from Westmoreland County to the township, that’s all,” said Walters. “We don’t have any idea what it will cost or how much work will be involved in the project at this point.”

A number of residents have attended meetings, encouraging the supervisors to extend water lines so that they can have public water service. Walters said most of the residents have contaminated wells and are looking forward to finding out what the survey shows.

In other unrelated matters, the supervisors agreed to use brine water on dirt roads such as Clark Road to help keep the dust down. The supervisors agreed to get Keystone Valley to spray the roads.

During the public comment period, resident Shirley Davis asked when work on the Rainy Town Bridge would be completed. Davis said her mother, Lucky Newell, who lives in the Hickory Square area of the township, is ill and cannot return to her home until the bridge is fixed.

“When mother is at home, I have to go there a couple of times a day to make sure everything is OK,” said Davis. “I can’t do that without the bridge. I mean, I can’t take her home until emergency personnel have a way to get to her house.”

Walters said he talked to a PennDOT official, who said as soon as work crews finish a job in Jefferson Township, they will take care of the Rainy Town Bridge.

“I would expect them to begin work on the bridge any day now,” said Walters. “The bridge should be completed by winter.”

Solicitor Richard Husband reported that he is working on an ordinance that authorizes the Dawson Fire Company to charge for the cost of certain emergency rescue services, in accordance with state code, and another ordinance to close Cunningham Bridge Road.

Husband said both ordinances should be ready to advertise at the Aug. 13 monthly meeting.
