Greene officials thanked for support
WAYNESBURG – The Greene County commissioners’ Thursday morning business meeting was short but not too short to give Ryerson Station State Park’s Lisa Wheeler the chance to acknowledge the commissioners’ support of a recent park event. “Fantastic” was the word Wheeler used for the children’s fishing derby held June 1 at the park.
Presenting them with a plaque in appreciation for their support and giving the commissioners T-shirts and mugs, Wheeler said the third annual event attracted 331 children to the Richhill Township location.
“This was for the children,” she said. “It was just fantastic, and every year we’re hoping to get larger and larger.”
Wheeler said the park will host an arts program soon, and plans are in the works for a historical interpretation program next year.
“We’re really trying to make some good things happen at the park,” she said.
Meanwhile, Chairman Dave Coder and Commissioner Scott Blair took care of the agenda business with Commissioner Farley Toothman absent.
They authorized Landmark Design Associates to proceed with the plans for a new deck at the county airport.
The deck is meant to upgrade the restaurant there, making the building that also houses the county’s 911 emergency dispatch center and a district justice’s office more suitable for outdoor dining.
They gave Widmer Engineering a 12-month time extension, or until next June, to present plans for the replacement of six bridges and 18 months, or until December 2003, for replacement of two more bridges.
They also agreed to ask the state Department of Environmental Resources for a grant that Chief Clerk Gene Lee said would allow the county to print materials for recycling education.
Among further items, the commissioners passed a resolution to allow the Greene County Industrial Development Authority to apply for Local Economic Development Assistance Funds on behalf of the county.
About $27,374 is available to the county, and that money would go toward the authority’s salaries, office and travel expenses and fees associated with training events or conferences.
