FACT earns grant HARRISBURG – A local transit provider has received a $200,000 state grant to provide transportation to Fayette County residents trying to work their way off welfare.
The grant, awarded to Fayette Area Coordinated Transportation in Uniontown, will provide transportation to jobs for welfare recipients who are re-entering the work force. Federal and state laws require welfare recipients to work an average of 20 to 30 hours per week after two years on cash assistance.
“The obvious first step on the road to self-sufficiency is to seek and obtain employment,” said Feather Houstoun, secretary of the Department of Public Welfare. “For many low-income Pennsylvanians, that task is more difficult because of a lack of local transportation. These grants will assist local partnerships in building transportation systems that will link a welfare recipient with work, child care and other essential services.”
Budget action expected
