Steelers sign two draft picks
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Draft picks Larry Foote and Lee Mays agreed to three-year contracts with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday. Foote, a linebacker selected on the fourth round, had 212 tackles, 11 sacks and three interceptions at Michigan. He was a semifinalist as a senior for the Butkus Award, presented annually to the player voted as the nation’s top linebacker.
Foote is expected to play extensively on the Steelers’ special teams as a rookie.
Mays, a former Texas El-Paso wide receiver and a sixth-round pick, agreed to a $956,000, three-year contract. A kick returner who also ran track at UTEP, Mays caught 201 passes for 2,907 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also returned 31 kickoffs for 576 yards with the Miners.
Terms of Foote’s deal were not available and his agent, Fletcher Smith, did not immediately return a telephone call to The Associated Press.
The Steelers, who report to training camp July 24, still have four unsigned draft picks, including first-rounder Kendall Simmons.
