Brownsville woman killed in car crash

A Brownsville woman died in a one-vehicle accident during heavy rains Friday, one-half mile south of the Pennsylvania border on Route 857 in Monongalia County, W.Va. Vallie C. Haney, 78, was traveling alone southbound when the purple Pontiac Grand Am she was driving struck an embankment around 4:45 p.m. during a thunderstorm in the area, according to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department.

Police said they don’t know if Haney died before or after the accident. Cheat Lake Volunteer Fire Chief Tim Trentini told the Dominion-Post newspaper that there was little damage to Haney’s vehicle and no skid marks on the road.

Police said there were no witnesses at the scene, and the cause of death is under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department at 304-291-7260.

Police said traffic was tied up on Route 857 was for more than an hour.

Born in Centerville Borough, Haney was retired from Eastman-Kodak Company in Rochester, N.Y, where she had been employed for 37 years.

She is survived by her sisters: Margaret E. Haney Veatch of Memphis, Tenn., and R. Gail Haney Harshman and her husband, Glenn Harshman, of Lufkin, Texas; and by many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are in the care of the Confer Funeral Home, 515 Front St., Brownsville, and will be announced.
