Event scheduled

Sheep Fest at Weatherbury Farm, to be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, will celebrate the heritage of wool and sheep in Washington County.

On Saturday night, a folk music jam will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students. Those who bring an instrument or spinning wheel will receive 50 cents off the admission price.

Wool from Washington County won the gold medal at the 1851 London World’s Fair. In fact, throughout much of the 19th century, the Upper Ohio Valley was the premier sheep-raising area in the country, producing a high-quality wool that achieved worldwide recognition.

Focusing on wool and related fiber arts, Sheep Fest will have ongoing traditional demonstrations of spinning, weaving, wool-dyeing, felting, knitting, crocheting, rug-making, chair-caning, bobbin lace-making and rope-making.

Folk music, including many songs of the late 1800s, will be played. The farm’s blacksmith forge will be open and have some examples of old hand-forged agricultural equipment. More old farm implements will be on display on the grounds.

Weatherbury Farm is located two miles south of Avella, just off Route 231, between routes 844 and 50. Directional signs will be on all major roads. For more information, call 724-587-3763 or visit Weatherbury Farm’s Web site at www.weatherburyfarm.com.
