Adverse weather does little to spoil fair fun

By Steve Ostrosky 3 min read

The start of Saturday’s events at the Fayette County Fair was periodically interrupted by rain, but the gray skies and occasional showers did not deter fairgoers. Bill Jackson, fair board president, said the rain delayed setup of the stage for country music band Lonestar, this year’s headliner, but he was hopeful the show would go off rain-free.

As of Saturday afternoon, tickets were still available for the show, and many people were coming early to the fair to avoid what they thought would be major congestion in and around the fairgrounds as showtime approached.

Jackson stayed cautiously optimistic that Mother Nature would intervene by showtime, but he said Friday afternoon’s thunderstorm caused some concern.

“We had some tents that were damaged and we are still having some trouble with a few today,” he said. “Four people were treated at first aid, but their injuries were very minor.”

Despite less than perfect conditions, most food vendors were reporting good business for the first few days of the fair and were looking forward to several more prosperous days before the fair ends next Saturday.

Jackson said the weather has been less than cooperative, and he is hopeful that the first weekend of the fair will be a great success.

“I certainly hope the rain lets up, because it has been frustrating at times,” he said. “But I think we’ll do just fine.”

Sunday’s activities begin at 9 a.m. with an Interdenominational church service on the Rainbow Stage, followed by the Open Horse Show at 10 a.m. Throughout the day Sunday, a Kitchie Lane Gospel Sing will be held at the Fiddlers’ Building.

Among the entertainment slated for Sunday are free shows from Lucid 1, Brownie Mary and the Buzz Poets at 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. All three shows will be held at the Indoor Arena and are free.

MotoCross practice gets under way at 4 p.m. in the Outdoor Arena, with the races beginning at 5 p.m. Admission to the event is $4 for adults and $1 for children. MotoCross Features will be held at 8:30 p.m., also at the Outdoor Arena.

The carnival will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 10 p.m. Pay-one-price carnival is $9 in the afternoon and $12 in the evening.

Also, Sunday is Pepsi Family Day, and anyone who brings a Sunday, July 28, 2002, church bulletin to the fair between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. will be admitted free.
