Youths show off creations in 4-H Fashion Show
The models at the Fayette County Fair’s 4-H Fashion Show on Sunday had plenty of reason to smile: they were showing off their own hard work. The 15 young women were a sampling of four 4-H sewing clubs in Fayette County where dozens of youngsters – both girls and boys – are learning how to sew. They make dresses, pants, shorts, shirts and suits. And they do it well.
“We had four finalists for the southwest regional show,’ explained Cathy Brady, extension agent who’s in charge of 4-H for Fayette County.
Those finalists included America Cardine, Rebecca Shearer, Cameron Chisler and Angie Robbins. Rachel Shearer also participated in the show.
On Sunday, 4-Hers who were interested volunteered to participate in the fashion show, which took place in the Youth Building to a large crowd eager to see the girls’ work.
“This is a fun show,’ said Brady. “Anybody can come. We’ve been doing it on Sunday now for three years and it’s worked out well.’
The youths included: Suzanne Rockwell, 14, of Dunbar, a member of Curfew Clovers; Rebecca Shearer, 13, of Smock, and another member of Curfew Clovers; Jessica Dzara, 11, of Smock, a member of Menallen Stitchers and a student at Lafayette School; Rachel Shearer, 14, of Smock, a member of Curfew Clovers and a student at Uniontown Area High School; Rebecca Giles, 14, a ninth grade student at Connellsville Junior High West; Katie Fitzsimmons, a member of Menallen Stitchers and a freshmen at Uniontown Area High School.
Angela Robbins, 16, of Keisterville, a member of Menallen Stitchers and a student at Uniontown Area High School; April Garletts, 12, a member of Curfew Clovers; Julie Johnson, 11, of Dunbar, a member of Sew Special and a student at Dunbar Borough Elementary; Molly McClure, a member of The Sunshine Bunch and a sixth grade student at Menallen Elementary; Jennifer Tandarich, 12, of Uniontown and a member of Menallen Stitchers; Rebekah Hudok, 8, of Uniontown, a member of Sew Special and a student at Hatfield Elementary.
Sammy Lenhart, 11, a member of the Sunshine Bunch and a sixth grade student at Menallen Elementary; Kelly Batronis, a member of Sew Special; and Sarah Howarth, a member of Menallen Stitchers and a junior at Uniontown Area High School.
The number of participants in 4-H sewing clubs is growing.
“There is such an interest,’ said Brady. “We’re always looking for more leaders. Anybody who’s interested and wants to get a club started can call me.’
