Alex Balla Sr., age 89, of Verona, Pa., and formerly of Richeyville, Pa., died at 5:10 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2002, in Seneca Manor, Verona. He was born May 13, 1913, in Vestaburg, Pa., son of Andrew Balla and Elizabeth Hegedus Balla.

Mr. Balla retired from the Youth Development Center, Canonsburg, Pa., where he was a House Parent.

He was formerly employed at J&L Steel Corporation’s Vesta 4 Mine and was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 762 Vestaburg.

He was a member of Daisytown Hungarian Club, Daisytown Athletic Club, and the William Penn Fraternal Association.

Mr. Balla was a member of Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church of Wilkinsburg, Pa.

On September 12, 1936, he married Mary Gyure Balla. She died June 20, 1995.

Also deceased are his parents.

Surviving are three sons: Alexander J. Balla and his wife Jean, Monroeville, Pa., James Balla and his wife Susan, Daisytown, Pa., Donald Balla Sr. and his wife Betty, Valencia, Pa.; five grandchildren: Bryan Balla and his wife Robin, Kevin Balla and his wife Kristine, Donald Balla Jr. and his wife Debbie, Mrs. Dennis (Melissa) O’Brien, Mrs. Scott (Danielle) Gumto; six great grandchildren: Zachary Balla and Allison Balla, Paige Balla, Joshua Balla and Andrew Balla, Dennis O’Brien Jr.; several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the JOHN B. GREENLEE FUNERAL HOME, 2830 Main Street, Beallsville, Pa., today, June 2, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., the hour of Service with Rev. Alexander Jalso officiating.

Interment will follow in Taylor Cemetery, West Pike Run Township, Brownsville, Pa.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.

Visitation was also held Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
