Lawrence “Ed” Piper
Lawrence “Ed” Piper, 82, of Greensboro, Pa., died at 2:56 a.m., on Monday, June 3, 2002, at LaFayette Manor, Uniontown, Pa., after a lengthy illness. He was born July 5, 1919, in Bagley, Pa., a son of the late Lawrence Walter and Marie Roberta Duffy Piper.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Marie Piper; two brothers, Earl Piper and Glenn Piper; and a sister, Geraldine Piper, who did in infancy.
Mr. Piper resided in the Greensboro area since 1947, and retired from the Duquesne Light Warwick Mine. He was a member of the Mapletown United Methodist Church and served on the Board of Directors of the Dunkard Valley Joint Municipal Authority. Mr. Piper was a 60-year member of the U.M.W.A., Duquesne Light Local 6310, where he served as President for 25 years. He worked as an organizer for the U.M.W.A., for two years, and as a Pennsylvania State Constable for four years.
Mr. Piper was also a social member of V.F.W. Post 6303 at Greensboro, and served on the Greene County Board of Assistance. He played Big 10 Baseball and umpired for 30 years in the Big 10 and the Fayette County Leagues. Mr. Piper received a citation from the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives for voting in every election for 50 consecutive years.
His wife Margaret W. Wardman Piper, whom he married on March 26, 1941, survives. Also surviving are a son, Lawrence E. Piper Jr., and his wife, Lois of Graysville, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Bowser and her husband, Arnie of Waynesburg, Pa.; six grandchildren, Lori Piper, Lee Piper, Kristen Emerson, Scott Emerson, Jennifer Jeffries and Tom Jeffries; a brother Donald Lee Piper of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister Roberta Jean Lee of Wildwood, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the YOSKOVICH FUNERAL HOME, Martin J. Yoskovich, Funeral Director, 300 South Vine Street (Route 88), Carmichaels, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m., with Dr. William L. Parker officiating. Interment will follow in Monongahela Hill Cemetery, Mapletown, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Mapletown United Methodist Church, PO Box 502, Greensboro, PA 15338-0502.
