Hearing scheduled for Dunbar Township junkyard
DUNBAR TWP. – Solicitor Don McCue announced that a public hearing to determine if an eighth salvage or junkyard can be opened in the township has been rescheduled for June 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fayette County Public Safety Building in Uniontown. Speaking at the regular monthly supervisors’ meeting Thursday, McCue said the first public hearing was continued a few months ago and then rescheduled for this month. McCue reminded resident Scott Kettelis and other interested residents that if they have something to say on the matter, the hearing is the place to say it.
In April several residents expressed their displeasure over the idea of another junkyard operating in the township. Dale Thornton and Genevieve Logan told supervisors Tom Yekel, Gene Frazier and Ron Keller that the township had enough salvage yards.
Logan said landowner Dwaine Gordon, who has proposed a salvage yard on Bell Drive, is already accepting junk vehicles. McCue said that should not be the case, since Gordon was told not to accept anything until the zoning hearing board reached a decision on the matter.
Gordon, who was at the April meeting, said the land is zoned for business, and he has a right to conduct business.
In other unrelated matters, Richard Widmer, vice president of Widmer Engineering Inc. of Connellsville, reported that resurfacing on Duck Pond Road should begin Monday, weather permitting.
“The project should take two days if it doesn’t rain,” said Widmer. “Residents traveling on Duck Pond Road should consider other alternatives, since delays along the narrow road will occur during resurfacing.”
The supervisors also conducted the following business:
– Reported that the sewage authority office will be closed June 17. Regular office hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
– Announced that the Fayette County Hard-To-Recycle Drop off Event will be held June 22 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fayette County Fairgrounds. Items to be accepted will be used motor oil and tires, large steel appliances and electronic items such as broken television sets, microwave ovens, radios and computers.
The cost for large steel appliances is $2 each, while old electronic items and tires are $1 each. Items that will not be accepted are household hazardous waste and paint cans. For more information, call 724-430-4884.
– Agreed to extend a PNC loan for continued sewerage upgrades in the township. McCue said the extension allows the contract to continue until Dec. 31.
