Menallen Township supervisors announce return of summer program
MENALLEN TWP. – With school out for the summer, the township supervisors Thursday announced the return of the summer YMCA camp program to Menallen School. Children from Menallen and Franklin townships are welcomed at the four-week summer program. Camp host Dorothy Grahek told supervisors in a letter that this year the camp managed to secure grant funding to help keep costs low. For the first two weeks of camp, June 17 to 28, the cost will be only $20 per child.
In the program, breakfasts are served at no cost and snacks can be purchased for a small fee. Hours of operation are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with early drop-off and late pick-up times available.
Supervisors noted that a field trip for campers will be announced at a later date and that the kids will get one swim day each week at the Uniontown YMCA. Sign-up for the program is being held at the Uniontown YMCA, and parents can chose to sign kids up one week at a time.
Regarding the summer vacation break, supervisors reminded teen-agers that the curfew hours have changed.
On weekdays, teens must be off the streets by 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on weekends or face fines. Supervisor Robert Yatsko said a local district justice said he might attend a summertime meeting to explain to residents how the curfew and violations are handled under the law.
Also, the supervisors reminded residents that the warmer weather means that properties must be kept neat or the owners will face fines. Yatsko also said that burning has been restricted to Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The supervisors also conducted the following business:
– Voted to advertise again for bids to supply road maintenance materials and fuels, as the listed date on the ad was incorrect. Supervisor John Yantko noted that he mistakenly listed the opening date as Friday instead of the meeting night. The bids received will be returned unopened to the firms that responded.
– Agreed to join, by resolution, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s $1 program. Supervisors explained that the program will allow HUD homes repossessed in the community to be purchased by the local municipality for only $1.
– Scheduled their next monthly meeting for July 3 at 8 a.m. The normal monthly meeting would have fallen on the July 4 holiday.
– Informed residents that Noah’s Ark of Fayette County Humane & Animal Protection Society is now responsible for picking up stray animals and should be called in case of animal control problems. The phone number for the New Salem Road shelter is 724-245-8524.
– Announced that the annual firemen’s hog roast will be held in the woods next to the New Salem Fire Department on July 6 and 7. Fireworks will be set off the last night. Anyone wishing to donate to pay for the fireworks is asked to call Steve Forsythe at the fire department.
