Popular horse trainer to give demonstration

By Frances Borsodi Zajac 2 min read

Professional horse trainer Curt Pate of Montana will visit Uniontown on Friday, June 14, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. to give a demonstration on colt starting techniques. Pate’s visit will take place at All Around Fence Co. Inc., located on Route 40 in Uniontown. The company is one mile west of the Uniontown Mall at the former Carter Lumber site.

Admission to the demonstration is free. All Around Fence Co. is sponsoring Pate’s visit with Priefert Livestock & Equine Handling Systems and Gallagher Power Fence.

The Giddy-Up 4-H horse club will sell refreshments as a fund-raiser.

Mary Allison of All Around Fence Co. said the visit was sponsored in an effort to acquaint the public with the company, which has expanded its line of merchandise. In addition to residential fences, the company now offers an agricultural line.

Pate, Allison said, is a horse trainer who travels the country giving demonstrations and holding clinics.

“In this demonstration, he’ll take a 2-year-old horse that’s never been ridden before and show people how to approach the horse to get him ready to ride. It’s what they call colt starting,” said Allison.

Paulette and Tim Griglak of Leith are providing the horse for Pate’s demonstration.

For his demonstration, Pate will take a halter broke colt through the steps of colt starting and explain the process to the crowd, emphasizing the need to work with the natural ability of the horse.

“If you think about it, the ranch horse has to do about everything – endurance, dressage, jumping – so a good ranch horse can go anywhere and do anything. So I train ranch horses that can be used for anything else,” according to a biography of Pate

Allison said her husband, daughter and brother-in-law recently saw Pate give a demonstration in North Carolina.

“They said he’s very entertaining and interesting to watch,’ she said.

Allison said the demonstration would be interesting to people who enjoy horses, particularly those who ride them for recreation.
