Summer program revs up for another summer

By Patty Shultz 3 min read

CONNELLSVILLE – The city will again offer a variety of indoor and outdoor activities for school-aged children during its annual summer recreation program. Swimming, basketball and tennis instruction coupled with afternoon supervised programs at the area playgrounds, should keep the youngsters occupied, said Councilwoman Chris Wagner, who serves as director of the public parks and buildings.

All programs will be held Monday through Friday from June 17 through July 26 with the exception of July 4 when the activities will be suspended due to the observance of the holiday.

Swimming instruction will be conducted at the Connellsville Senior High School pool from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. with students being scheduled according to age and ability.

Registration fees for Connellsville Area School District residents are $20 for the first child and $15 for each additional child. Non-resident fees are $25 for the first child and $20 for additional children.

Erin Omatick will serve as swimming coordinator with Clint Richter, Ashley Hawk, Sara Noel, Ashley Martin and John Tremba as assistants.

Tennis instruction will be given at the Connellsville Senior High School and Mountz Creek Park for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. The program is open to students in grades 3 through 12.

Instructors will contact students with schedules prior to the start of the program.

Cost is $12 for Connellsville area students and $15 for those residing outside the school district.

Don Campbell is coordinator for the program with Steve Lucas, Amy Rankin and Ryan Hornick serving as assistants.

The basketball program will be open to students in grades 4 through 9 and will be held at Cameron Court, adjacent to the Carnegie Library, from 9 a.m. until noon.

Registration is $12 for Connellsville students and $15 for those not living within the boundaries of the school district.

Leo Lowney will serve as program coordinator with Gary Nolan and Shane Kurtz as assistants.

Enrollment forms and registrations fees will be taken at the Connellsville Municipal Building today through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The city will also provide activities at five neighborhood playgrounds during the six-week summer program, according to general supervisor Brad Miner.

“We’re hoping for a good turnout,” said Miner. “Each playground will be supervised from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. and there will be games, crafts, basketball, volleyball and other activities for those who attend.”

Each supervisor will have access to a cellular telephone in case of emergencies and each site will have a first aid kit.

Wagner said that playground attendants have been encouraged to expand on the site programs and be creative in offering activities.

“I grew up with this program and remember how much fun we had as kids, and I want the children that take part this summer to have a good time,” Wagner said.

Amy Browell, Amanda Blackburn, Eric Luckey and Ron Shroyer will supervise the programs that will be held at Pinnacle, South Side, Woodruff, Second Ward and 12th Street parks.

There is no charge to take part in the playground activities.
