Officials to study police applicants
UPPER TYRONE TWP. – Supervisors will be busy over the next few weeks interviewing police applicants. Supervisor Sam Killinger said after running ads in local newspapers for a part-time police officer to replace former police officer Roger Adams, who resigned earlier this year, they have received at least three viable applications.
“Some of the applicants were from far away,” said Killinger. “We probably will not consider them if they are an hour or so away from the township.”
Last month, supervisor hired Robert Marnell of Scottdale as code enforcement officer. Adams had served as both police officer and code enforcement officer before turning in his resignation.
In other unrelated matters, township secretary Louise Koza reported that the Fayette County Board of Assessment Appeals property revaluation has sent the township the procedure for residents to file and appeal.
Koza said after July 1 residents could obtain an appeal for assessment form by calling 724-434-5030, downloading a form from the assessment office Web page at http://www.fayetteproperty.org or by contacting their local tax collector.
However, Koza said the forms must be filed with the assessment office no later than July 31. She also said that the assessment office would notify residents of their hearing date and time by registered mail.
Residents should collect documents or photos to substantiate their claim, which might include appraisals, building plans, list of comparable sales in their neighborhood or repair estimates.
Residents must appear at their hearing in person and may be represented by an attorney. If they fail to appear, the appeal will be considered abandoned and no further action will be taken, Koza said.
Koza said the assessment office wants township officials to remind residents that because an assessment is based on the fair market value of the property, when they file an appeal they are appealing the total value of the property, even though they may only disagree with one aspect of the valuation.
