Supervisors award contracts for road paving materials
REDSTONE TWP. – The Redstone Township supervisors opened bids for stone and road patching material Wednesday, though the items weren’t necessarily awarded to the lowest bidders. All three bidders offered the same price for premixed cold patch material at $34 a ton picked up. The prices for hot patch material ranged from $26.50 a ton to $27.50 a ton, but the highest bidder, March Asphalt in Belle Vernon, is the shortest traveling distance from the township. Supervisor Larry Williams noted that the half hour difference in travel time give the township a longer useable period with the patching material, so Marsh was awarded the contract. The other bidders were Better Materials and Golden Eagle Construction, in Connellsville and Uniontown respectively.
Better Materials submitted the low bid for various types of crushed stone, if it was picked up at their facility, but the delivery price was higher than the price offered by Coolspring Stone Supply Inc. Since the township generally has the stone delivered, Coolspring was given the contract.
No bids were received for anti-skid material. The township will solicit telephone bids for that item.
Residents were reminded that the county is hosting a hard-to-recycle day on June 22 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Fayette County Fairgrounds.
Code enforcement officer Robert Stogran said he issued 17 citations in May, including eight for high grass, three for junk vehicles, three for garbage, two for loose dogs and one for an unsafe structure. The supervisors instructed Stogran to file liens against five properties where the grass is being cut by the township, either by employees or by community service workers.
Resident Jim Meese complained about speeding and loud music in the area of the Hunters Ridge apartment complex. Police Capt. Dennis Field said the complex has received a drug elimination grant to install fencing and a gate to the apartment property, but it has not yet been installed.
