Mount Olivet adds extra worship service

By Frances Borsodi Zajac 2 min read

In an effort to reach more people, Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Uniontown will add an early worship service to its schedule beginning this Sunday. “We wanted to do something for the community,’ said the Rev. Vincent Winfrey Sr., pastor.

The new service will begin at 8 a.m. on Sundays at Mount Olivet, located at 51 Stewart Ave. Sunday school continues to be offered at 9:30 a.m. and the regular worship service is at 11 a.m.

Rev. Winfrey said black churches in the area do not have an early service. The idea of the 8 a.m. worship is not to deter people from coming to the 11 a.m. service but to attract people who have may not be attending church at all.

“Anyone who would like to come can come,’ said Rev. Winfrey.

The new service will also be shorter than the 11 a.m. worship. Rev. Winfrey said the 8 a.m. service will last about an hour while the 11 a.m. worship is usually two to two-and-a-half hours long.

At present, Rev. Winfrey will preside at both services.

He commented, “We want to do the work of the church for outreach. We don’t know how it will turn out but we’re going to do it.’

In another effort to do outreach, Rev. Winfrey will offer a worship service on June 21 at 6 p.m. at Bierwood Acres.

Mount Olivet Baptist Church has approximately 150 to 160 active members, Rev. Winfrey said.
