William H. “Bill” Conroy, 79, of Uniontown, Pa., died Thursday, June 13, 2002, in Mount Saint Macrina Manor. He was born November 6, 1922, in York Run, Pa., son of Michael Conroy and Sarah Ellen Blanch Conroy.

Mr. Conroy was a Veteran of World War II who served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant with the Medical Corps.

He was a City of Uniontown employee for over 41 years and retired as Superintendent of the Uniontown Sanitation Department.

He was a member of Central Christian Church in Uniontown, General George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103 in Hopwood, Pa., American Legion Post 51 in Uniontown, Past Commander and life member of Disabled American Veterans, and was the Manager of The Uniontown Circle Club for the past 29 years.

A brother, James Edward Conroy, six sisters, Elizabeth Rich, Mary Ellen Conroy, Alice Brushel, Rose Rozzi, Kathryn Dollar, Grace Donley, and parents preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elva E. Retkofsky Conroy, with whom he would have celebrated their 55th anniversary yesterday, Saturday, June 15; and two sisters: Virginia Lee Constable of Footedale, Pa., and Emma Jean Wydra and her husband, Adam, of Mason, Illinois.

Friends will be received in the JEROME W. SHELL FUNERAL HOME, 164 South Mount Vernon Avenue, Uniontown, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday, June 17, until 11 a.m., the hour of Service with the Rev. Arthur Mace officiating.

Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Uniontown, where Military Services will be accorded by General George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103 of Hopwood.

Uniontown Circle Club will hold services this evening at 7 p.m.

Visitation was also held Saturday form 7 to 9 p.m.
