Leak investigated A chlorine leak Wednesday morning forced state police to close Route 40 for a time, though no injuries were reported.
According to a supervisor at Fayette County 911, the leak was reported just after 10:30 a.m. at a Pennsylvania-American Water Co. plant near the Searights Crossroads.
State police and the HAZMAT team were assisted by New Salem, Footedale and Republic fire departments, according to 911.

City police said garbage cans in front of St. John the Baptist Byzantine Church’s school building on East Main Street were on fire at 2 a.m. Wednesday. The fire department extinguished the fire.

Betty Long told city police that a green 21-inch Roadmaster girls bike that was chained and locked on her front porch was stolen Tuesday.

Warrant issued
State police obtained a warrant charging Christian Andrew Nestor of Smithfield with simple assault for allegedly striking Teresa Lynn Nestor of Smithfield several times in the face and throwing her to the ground several times Sunday at 513 Outcrop Road.

State police said they are investigating a report that Jessica Nicole Swihart of Lake Lynn was injured in an assault by a known woman and man Wednesday at 4706 Morgantown Road.

State police in Waynesburg cited Luca Pennisi, 19, and William Lawrence Moffatt, 18, both of Morgantown, W.Va., and Shawn Michael McCracken, 20, and Aaron Nadiv Allon, 18, both of Waynesburg, with criminal mischief for allegedly throwing a large rock through a front window of The Grocery Bag at 3 a.m. Saturday.

State police said an unknown driver struck a utility pole along Old McClellandtown Road, about a mile east of McClellandtown, at 3 a.m. Saturday and fled the scene.

State police said a light fixture was taken from Barbara Knight’s residence at the intersection of two state roads Wednesday morning.

Truck breaks down
California Borough firefighters returning from a fire at the Isabella Volunteer Fire Department social hall Wednesday came across a tractor-trailer truck broken down at the intersection of Routes 40 and 43. The rear axle on the truck had broken, spilling gear oil on the ground.
Traffic was detoured around the scene onto the berm of the on-ramp to Route 43 for more than an hour. State police from Belle Vernon also responded to the scene.

Hearing continued
A preliminary hearing for two city residents charged with manufacturing counterfeit money has been continued for a fourth time at the request of legal counsel.
The hearing for Robert E. Hunter and Tina M. Warrick, initially scheduled for April 10 at District Justice Ronald Haggerty’s office, was rescheduled to May 29 and continued again until Wednesday. The hearing now will be held July 31, but no time has been set.
Hunter and Warrick, both 31, of 602 N. Pittsburgh St., were charged in April with forgery, criminal conspiracy and unlawful use of computers stemming from the incident.
Officials from the U.S. Secret Service and Fayette County district attorney’s office, along with Connellsville Police Department, set up a sting operation to determine that the couple were selling counterfeit money. Police said they obtained a warrant to search the couple’s home and retrieved computers and other items related to making counterfeit money.
Hunter and Warrick remain free on $10,000 straight cash bond.

John Edward Capan III of Hopwood was charged with driving under the influence of cocaine after tests showed the presence of cocaine in his system during a May 11 auto accident on Coolspring Street,.

Woman not injured
State police said no injuries were reported when Tina Turney of Connellsville lost control of her vehicle on Route 982 and struck a fence at 6:15 a.m. June 8.

Bike stolen
Tina M. Stroko, 27, of Uniontown told state police that a maroon and black, 16-inch Wipeout bike with wire rims and a missing chain guard was taken from her Chaffee Street yard between 11:30 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. Tuesday.

State police said Tracey Lynn Walker, 36, of Connellsville was not injured in a one-vehicle accident on Clinton Road at 10 p.m. Friday.

Accident with injuries
State police said two small children were injured when the vehicle they were riding in was struck from behind while stopped in the left lane of Route 51 at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.
According to police Tanya Lee Thomas was stopped in the left hand lane of Route 51, and she and passenger Allen James Thomas were standing outside of the vehicle when it was struck from behind by Timothy J. Grimes of Irwin.
Police said that both vehicles crossed the northbound lanes of Route 51 before coming to rest in a grassy area just north of Pittsburgh Lane. Tanya Marie Thomas, 2, and Aleesha Nicole Thomas, 1, received moderate to severe injuries in the accident.
The two girls were taken by medical helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Police noted both were in child safety seats.

Joseph Baron of Grindstone told state police that between 11:30 p.m. Monday and 8 p.m. Tuesday his mailbox was damaged.

Hit-and-run
Lottie Lynch of Belle Vernon told state police that her vehicle was struck from behind by a 1986 Chevy coupe as she was stopped on Route 51 to turn onto Harmony Church Road at 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Lynch suffered a minor injury in the accident. Police said that the vehicle was later located at a residence in Wickhaven but the driver had fled prior to officers arrival.

Michele Lynn Morgan, 20, of Mariana told state police that a white male in his late teens to early 20s removed a pack of cigarettes from her purse while it was on the counter at Crossroad’s Convenience Store on Route 40 at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.
Morgan told police that store employees confronted the youth and the item was returned.

Richard M. Pahula, 47, of Brownsville told state police that an unknown substance was splashed on his vehicle marring the paint while it was parked in front of his Brashear Avenue home in Hiller between 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.

Accident
State police said minor injuries were reported when vehicles operated by Patricia Metz, 24, of Fairchance and Lynn Sanner, 25, of Connellsville sideswiped at 4:08 p.m. Monday on Broadford Road. Both drivers suffered minor cuts from broken glass.

Sommer Huseman of Hiller told police that between 10:30 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday her Fourth Street home was entered and the following items valued at $5,210 removed: 1993 Kawasaki dirt bike, stand for the bike, Lawnboy lawn mower, spare tire for the dirt bike, weed trimmer, 2 MVP hand jacks, a racing helmet and female racing pants.

State police said that Brian Richard Harshman, 16, of Scottdale was reported as missing from his residence in Terrace Acres since 10 p.m. June 19. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call state police at (724) 929-6262.
