Ben Franklin
Ben Franklin said, “A man who chops his own firewood is warmed by it twice.” Obviously, Franklin never hired anybody to chop his firewood. Hiring someone to chop and stack your firewood allows you to be warmed by it several times. Crabby tells us she learned this recently when she tried to clean up her yard.
Crabby hired two young men to cut up the old tree last summer. The guys stacked the first two thirds fine, but boys will be boys and they got sloppy towards the end, letting the wood and bark lay wherever it fell.
Fall and winter came and went and the spring brought a lovely collection of weeds to the yard. Crabby couldn’t mow the grass because she kept running into pieces of wood so she got out her machete and chopped the weeds by hand – that warmed her once. Restacking the remaining one third of the firewood warmed her a second time. Making several mad dashes across the yard when she encountered the wildlife (rodents, wasps, toads, snakes) that had taken up residence in the wood pile warmed her several more times. This leads Crabby to believe that Franklin had it all wrong, he would have been warmer if he had gotten someone else to chop his firewood.
