Special baby shower to be held for new mothers, mothers-to-be
New mothers and mothers-to-be are invited to the Mom’s Shower 2002 information fair to be held Wednesday, May 8, at the Uniontown Fireman’s Social Hall. The Mom’s Shower is a baby shower for Fayette County mothers, complete with educational games, prizes and food.
“It’s a fun day for moms and moms to be, where they are able to learn how to take care of themselves and their babies,” said Jessica Hajeck, senior resource consultant at Fayette County Community Action Agency.
More than 30 Fayette County health and social service providers along with various businesses and community members are sponsoring the fifth annual mom’s shower at the Uniontown Fireman’s Social Hall on Dunbar Street from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. Pre-registration is required.
According to co-chair Valerie Faris, prevention specialist for the Fayette Drug and Alcohol Commission, 30 agencies will participate in an information fair and the shower, for the first time, will host a guest speaker. Dr. Raj Popat, a local obstetrician, will speak on prenatal care and related issues.
Hajeck said the educational games will stress the mother’s mental, physical and emotional well being and proper nutrition for the mother and baby.
“This is not just baby bingo. The women will learn pertinent information for new mother and maternity care to baby care,” Faris said.
Faris said mothers will also be introduced to different agencies and services available in the Fayette County area for themselves and their babies. In addition, participants will also learn how to properly install and position a car seat and learn valuable breastfeeding information.
In addition to the information, participants will have a chance to win some very valuable prizes.
“You wouldn’t believe the generosity of the community,” Faris said of the donated prizes, which include infant layettes, dehumidifiers, car seats and cribs.
Mothers who delivered or will deliver their baby during the period of Jan. 1, 2002- Dec. 31, 2002, are invited.
Paula Molchany, maternity services specialist for the Family Health Council said 200 people have already registered. The registration deadline has passed, but Molchany said they are accepting some late registrations.
“Sometime people register but forget to show-up. People can still register but they should hurry,” Molchany said.
Registration is limited and requires verification from their physician. Registration forms can be obtained at most Fayette County obstetrician offices or by calling 724-437-1582. Attendance is limited to mothers only.
For those in need of transportation to the event it is suggested they call the Fayette Area Coordinated Transportation (FACT) office at 1-800-321-RIDE or 430-4600.
