One Falcon team came up short in its quest to claim a share of a boys tennis section title on Thursday, but another Falcon team will take aim at that same goal today after earning a key win. While Brownsville was dropping a 4-1 decision to visiting Greensburg Central Catholic, leaving coach Dan LoNigro’s Falcons in second place in Section 1-AA, Connellsville was trouncing Ringgold, 4-1, to set up a Section 5-AAA rematch with first-place Hempfield that could make coach Don Campbell’s Falcons a co-champion.
Both Connellsville (14-2, 9-2) and Brownsville (8-3, 8-2) have already clinched playoff berths.
Connellsville got victories at No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles from Ryan Hornick and Josh Martin, respectively. Hornick won a three-set battle over Mike Bartoletti, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker in the third set, 7-2. Martin won in straight sets.
Campbell’s Falcons swept the doubles matches with Matt Ratai and Steve Lucas winning at No. 1 and Steve Haines and Gene Cunningham triumphing at No. 2.
“I thought that we played well today, despite the windy conditions,” Campbell said. “It was a good match to prepare us for Hempfield.”
Connellsville hosts Hempfield at 3:30 p.m. today. The Falcons lost to the Spartans, who are 10-1 in section play, earlier in the season, 4-1, at Hempfield.
Brownsville’s lone win against the Centurions (14-2, 10-0), who also beat the Falcons 4-1 earlier in the season, came at No. 3 singles from Luke Lucostic, who didn’t lost a game in a straight-set rout. GCC picked up close victories at No. 2 singles, where C.J. Goldstrom beat Neil Chafin, 6-4, 6-3, and No. 1 doubles, where John Clatty and Robel Tesfamariam wore down Josh Seelye and Elliott Sally, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
