Tailgate party planned to raise funds
Pleasant View Presbyterian Church, 533 Royal Road, Smock, will host its second annual tailgate party on Sunday, immediately following worship, to raise money for the PVPC’s medical-aid fund. Weather permitting, the event will take place in the church’s pavilion.
PVPC’s medical-aid fund is administered by the session (official board) and exists for the purpose of helping members and friends who unexpectedly find themselves facing extraordinary medical expenses not covered by insurance.
Since starting the fund more than a year ago, the fund has helped a number of people who, in the face of extraordinary circumstances and catastrophic illness, had no other resource to which to turn.
“We are not an insurance company of last resort for people who have not planned ahead,’ said the Rev. Keith Conover, pastor. “In fact, the folks who have come seeking our help have been ordinary people like you and me, who do have medical coverage through insurance or an HMO.
“These days, unfortunately, insurance coverage is not always adequate in the fact of extraordinary, life-threatening illnesses. We’ve discovered that, often, medical tests and treatment have hidden costs associated with them and not every insurance covers those. At that point, we have been able to help in paying an unexpected bill so that medical treatment isn’t jeopardized.
“The annual tailgate party is one way we raise money for the medical-aid fund.’
Again this year, the party will be almost like tailgating in the lot just outside PNC Park before a Pirates’ game, complete with hot dogs, chips and cold drinks.
At 12:45 p.m., professional actor Gregory Gibson Kenney will present his first-person portrayal of Pirates’ great Willie Stargell in uniform.
Last year, he portrayed Roberto Clemente. Kenney founded and manages his own company, Educate Us Productions, a theatrical company based in Bethel Park. He has appeared in countless public schools and colleges, on stage and in film.
