Parade planned Smithfield Borough will hold its annual Memorial Day parade Monday, May 27, at 2 p.m. The parade will be formed at 1 p.m. at the bottom of Liberty Street.
This year, the parade will move up Liberty Street, continue onto Main Street, and then to Mount Moriah Cemetery, where services will be held to honor those who gave their lives in military service.
Any organizations or individuals who want to participate or help in any way should call Mayor Chuck Cieszynski at 724-569-4892.
Parade applications can be mailed out or picked up at the Smithfield State Bank or the Smithfield Borough Building.
Race scheduled
The Connellsville Area Junior High West National Junior Honor Society will sponsor the 11th annual West Honor Run for kids in kindergarten through ninth grade Saturday morning, rain or shine.
All proceeds benefit the Marilyn Shearer Scholarship in honor of Richard H. Galand
The race starts and finishes at Junior High West. The course is flat.
At 9:30 a.m., the non-competitive walk begins, and parents may walk with small children.
The competitive races will follow, with breaks of about five minutes between each. Kids in grades 7 to 9 will compete in the three-quarter-mile race; grades 4 to 6, the half-mile race; and grades 2 and 3 and kindergarten and grade 1, the quarter-mile race.
The top five boys and girls in each division will receive awards. Each participant will receive a certificate, and random drawings for additional prizes will be held. All pre-registered participants will receive a runner’s T-shirt. Those who register on race day are not guaranteed to receive a shirt.

Participants can park at the Junior High West lot and the Junior High West stadium lot, not in front of the school.
Fayette Striders Running Club will keep track of timing and results, and the Connellsville Area Junior High West National Junior Honor Society will provide food and refreshments.
