Robert James Charlton, 61, of Coal Center, Pa., died Monday, May 6, 2002, in Monongahela Valley Hospital.

He was born Sept. 3, 1940, in Brownsville, Pa., son of Donald and Julia (Steiner) Charlton. Bob was a 1963 graduate of WVU in Aero Space Engineering and received a Masters Degree in 1965. He served in the Air Force from 1965 to 1969, working as a pilot in our nation’s early classified space program. Following active duty, he worked in the steel industry.

He married his wife, Barbara in 1976, and went to work in the coal industry. In 1988, he began his own company treating acid mine drainage by removing contaminants and returning clarified water to our state’s streams.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara; mother, Julia Ward; children, Donald E. Charlton and wife, Cynthia of California, Lynn DeFranco and husband, John of Coal Center, Kevin Kosker and wife, Catarina of Johnstown, and David A. Kosker and wife, Susan of Latrobe; and grandchildren, Michael A. Charlton, Bobbi A. DeMoss, Robbie, John Tyler and Ryan A. DeFranco, Jennifer and Leah Kosker, Bryan Edwards and Lucas Kosker.

Friends will be received in the MARISCOTTI FUNERAL HOME INC., Anthony N. Mariscotti, Supervisor, 323 Fourth St., California, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and on Friday until 9:30 a.m., when a blessing service will be held, followed by a 10 a.m., Mass of Christian burial in the Historic Church of St. Peter, Brownsville, Pa., with the Rev. Fr. Vincent Gigliotti officiating. Interment will follow in LaFayette Memorial Park.
