William Eugene Hughes, 54, of Tyrone, Pa., formerly of Connellsville, Pa., died suddenly on Sunday, May 5, 2002, in Tyrone Hospital as a result of a heart attack. He was born Nov. 1, 1947, in Connellsville, a son of Jesse J. and Ellen W. Stewart Hughes of Connellsville.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Bellwood.

Bill graduated from Connellsville Area High School. He then attended and graduated from California University of Pennsylvania, after receiving a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and a master’s degree in accounting.

Bill was a native of Connellsville most of his life. While residing in this area, he was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He was formerly employed as city clerk of Connellsville. He was also a member of the city council and municipal and parking authority boards. While living here, he was a member of the Connellsville Elks and Lions Clubs.

An important time in Bill’s life was spending time with his wife and children. He also found time to golf, hunt and fish with his friends. He also coached Connellsville Girls Softball Leagues.

Bill and his family moved to Tyrone, Pa., where he was employed as a manager for Antis Township, up until his present death. While residing there, he was active in the community. He was also a member of Mountain Lodge of Masons No. 281, in Altoona.

In addition to his parents, Bill is survived by his loving wife, Glenna Jaynes Hughes to whom he was married for 34 years; two sons, the Rev. William E. Hughes and his wife, Amanda of Elderton, Pa., and Joshoah W. Hughes, at home; two daughters, Deborah J. Vukmanic and her husband, Mark of Lancaster, and Regina Hughes, at home; and a brother, Jesse D. Hughes and his wife, Ally of Kent, Ohio.

Friends will be received in the VITO C. MARTUCCI FUNERAL HOME, 123 South First St., West Side, Connellsville, today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Additional viewing will be held Thursday, at the Trinity Evangelist Lutheran Church, 126 East Fairview Ave., Connellsville, from 10 to 11 a.m. the hour of the service, with Pastor Philip Ramstead and Pastor Herb Dubler officiating. Interment will follow in Green Ridge Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joshoah and Regina Hughes Scholarship Fund, Elderton State Bank, PO Box 457, Elderton, PA 15736.
