Area man marks 92nd birthday
Columbus R. Smith, who has lived in Clarksville for more than 60 years, celebrated his 92nd birthday on Saturday, May 11. Born in Shamrock, Smith was married to the late Mary Ann Smith. The couple had three children, the late Lee Martin; Donald Smith, a retired Air Force serviceman who lives in Alamagorda, N.M.; and Hollis Batista, a Beth-Center Elementary School teacher who lives in Bethel Park.
He also has three grandchildren, including Mellisa Smith of Houston, Texas; Malik Smith, who lives with his parents in Alamagorda, N.M.; and Christopher Edmonds, who lives in Irwin. He worked for the Clyde Coal Mine for 41 years.
Many elderly senior citizens, who live in several home care facilities in Greene and Washington counties, know Smith. For the past 12 years, Smith has faithfully visited his elderly friends every Tuesday, leading a crusade of community service and support.
Batista said her father has always provided a helping hand to those in need.
“From driving elderly friends to doctor appointments to visiting the sick at the local hospital, to helping them get groceries or driving them to get their prescriptions, my father has always been available as a reliable source of support and help to the local community,” Batista said.
Smith also served as a trustee at the Pitgas First Baptist Church for the past 12 years. He has become a positive role model to a younger generation and a loyal friend to many elderly members of the community.
