Stancato set for marathon

A well-known advocate for the Leukemia Society is planning to take a trip to Sweden to participate in the Stockholm Marathon.

Al Stancato of Belle Vernon will depart on June 5 to participate in the marathon three days later.

This will be Stancato’s first visit to the Scandinavian country.

The 24th Stockholm Marathon is open to 14,000 runners from all over the world and is one of Sweden’s major sporting events. This marathon comes just as the nation is celebrating its 750th anniversary with special events all over the capital, and the local runner will be in town for five full days.

Worldwide racing events are not new for Stancato, who has completed nine marathons prior to the Stockholm event. He won in his category in races in Athens and Paris, while raising money for leukemia research and treatment.

The Stockholm race will take the marathon veteran on a two-lap course through the central parts of Stockholm.

The course presents widely varying surroundings, ranging from the wooded Royal Park to a breathtaking view of the city from the Vasterbron Bridge, showcasing buildings that span the medieval time period to the present day.
