Warning issued At its recent regular meeting, Smithfiled borough council warned residents that the dog and cat ordinance will be enforced.

Borough secretary Jamie Hoone said the ordinance stipulates that it is unlawful to allow dogs and cats to roam borough streets and alleys and to trespass onto public and private property not owned by the pet owner.

She said it also is illegal to keep a vicious cat or dog as a pet in the borough. Violators face fines of at least $50 and no more than $300, according to the ordinance. Without the services of the Fayette County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Hoone noted that the borough officer can’t detain the animals, but can and will cite the pet owners found guilty of allowing their animals to roam free.
