Luzerne Township woman donates land
LUZERNE TWP. – If the Luzerne Township supervisors ever decide to expand the current township facilities or construct a new building, they’ll have the land to do it. Next-door neighbor Mary Stokes, the mother-in-law of supervisor Ted Kollar, has donated two acres adjacent to the current township building to the township. There are no immediate plans for the use of the land.
The supervisors also voted to hire D.J. Angelone to work four days a week at $9 an hour to serve as both the township code enforcement officer and emergency management coordinator.
Angelone is believed to be the first paid municipal emergency management coordinator in the county.
Angelone will be splitting his 4-day week between code enforcement and emergency management, though last week’s flooding has kept him busy with emergency management, both handling the immediate emergency and updating the township’s emergency plan. He is encouraging residents who sustained damage to submit damage estimates to his office. Angelone said the reports will be compiled and submitted for disaster assistance, though there is no guarantee of funding.
A letter of apology will be going out to a number of Luzerne Township residents who erroneously received collection letters from the township’s garbage hauler, CBF. The letters were mistakenly sent to customers who had already paid their bills, not to those who are delinquent.
The township received notice that the Fayette County SPCA will no longer be providing animal- control services.
The supervisors voted to have the newly formed Noah’s Ark serve as the animal- control service for the township on a temporary, month-to-month basis.
Noah’s Ark will be paid $254.74 per month, the same as the SPCA had been paid. The SPCA last month patrolled four hours in the township, received nine complaints, and took in 14 dogs from Luzerne Township.
The Fayette County Election Bureau is still seeking workers for the polling place in LaBelle for the primary election. Workers must be residents of Luzerne Township Precinct 6.
