Grindstone man observes 93rd birthday

James Gallo of Grindstone celebrated his 93rd birthday on Thursday, May 2, with family and friends. Gallo was born May 2, 1909, in Brier Hill and has lived in Fayette County his entire life. He spent some time away from home to serve his country with the U.S. Army during World War II.

During his tour of duty, Gallo received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, European African and Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and Bronze Arrowheads.

He participated in the initial landing of the combined Allied forces on the shores of Normandy, which continued into northern France.

A retired coal miner and sports historian, Gallo keeps abreast of all major sports programs, focusing mainly on the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers.
