Dunbar sets spring cleanup dates

By Jackie Beranek 2 min read

DUNBAR – Council will hold this year’s spring cleanup on June 22 and 24. Residents must pre-pay for their items to be picked up at the borough building by June 21, according to borough secretary Rachelle Hughes.

Hughes said items should be placed at the curb the night before pickup. Items to be collected on June 22 include hard-to-recycle items such as large appliances, oil and tires. The cleanup is being held in conjunction with the county’s cleanup, to be held at the Fayette County Fairgrounds.

Cost for pickup will be what the county collects, according to Hughes. A list of items and their costs is available at the borough building. Additional items will be collected on June 24 for a flat fee of $5. Residents can obtain more information on rate fees by calling the borough office at 724-277-4949.

In other matters, the annual Memorial Day parade and ceremonies have been announced. The Dunbar American Legion Hughes Post 146 will hold the services this year on Monday, May 27.

The parade is slated to form at the old Dunbar Borough School on Connellsville Street at 9:45 a.m. and move to the Sons of Italy on Woodvale Street at 10 a.m. where services will be held for those who died at sea.

The parade will then move to the Honor Roll on Woodvale Street for the main services with the Rev. Lee Maley, from Pechin Chapel in Dunbar, who will give the invocation and benediction.

The main speaker will be Carolyn McKinney, a freelance writer from Meyersdale. She will talk about her uncle, Alfred L. Wilson, a native of Fairchance, who became the recipient of the Medal of Honor after saving the lives of 10 men during World War II.

McKinney in 1994 authored the biography of Wilson, entitled “The Gentle Giant of the 26th Division. In her spare time, McKinney enjoys traveling, going to World War II events and spending time with her family. She also likes to walk with her collie dog and buggy ride through the rural countryside.

Connellsville Elementary bands under the direction of Dane Shultz will provide musical selections. The firing squad is from North Union VFW Post 8543.

Refreshments will be served at the Dunbar Volunteer Fire Department for all that participate.
