Beth-Center advanced to the second round of the WPIAL Class A softball playoffs with a 5-0 shutout against visiting Leechburg on Tuesday. Kristi Mazzaferri threw a two-hitter for the Lady Bulldogs (15-5) with four strikeouts and no walks. The two Leechburg (8-7) hits came on singles in the fourth and fifth inning.

Stacey Greenawalt had the hot bat for B-C batting 3-for-3 with a double and two singles, two RBIs and scored a run.

“We played a good game defensively,” commented Beth-Center coach Frank Mazeppa.

Beth-Center will play Greensburg Central Catholic on Thursday.

County League Baseball

Carmichaels 5, Belle Vernon 1 – Eric Holt made his County League debut in style with a grand slam in the seventh inning as Carmichaels won the opener.

Derrick Fritz pitched two innings in relief, struck out five and walked one to get the win. Pete Stofcheck was the starter striking out seven and walking three.

Pat Palcovick took home the loss.

Masontown 10, Perryopolis 0 – Masontown’s Adam Dukate pitched five innings, struck out eight and walked two as they blanked Perryopolis.

Scott VanSickle had a solo home run and two singles, Jim Cole homered and Joel Yednock had three singles for Masontown.

Mike Matras had three of the four Perryopolis hits with two doubles and a single. Josh Kibe was the losing pitcher.

Brownsville 9, Charleroi 8 – Brownsville’s Dane Durinzi, Brad McClelland and Kevin Dvorchak all homered as they slid past Charleroi in the county league opener.

Durinzi led off the game with a solo shot in the first inning and McClelland added a two-run shot in the same inning to put Brownsville on the scoreboard first.

Winning pitcher Kevin Dvorchak hurled five innings, struck out four and walked four and Joe Testa picked up the save. Testa struck out three and walked one.

Charleroi’s Mark Derlux hit two singles and had an RBI, Luke Mollis had two singles and an RBI and Trevor Consavage had three singles.

“We put Charleroi in position with some defensive miscues,” commented Brownsville coach Dan Kupets.
