Waynesburg led 5-4 heading into the eighth inning Wednesday, but was unable to get Masontown-Point Marion out in the bottom of the inning as the home team scored two runs for a 6-5 Fayette American Legion victory called due to darkness. Masontown (1-0) led 3-0 after an inning, but the visitors countered with two runs in the top of the second inning. The home team added a run before Waynesburg moved into its only lead with three runs in the top of the third inning.

Trailing 5-4 in the eighth, Scott Piper led off with a pinch-hit single. Allan Smodic walked as a pinch-hitter, then Adam Weakland’s sacrifice attempt was thrown away to score Piper. Chris Buncic drove home the winning run with a single to right field.

Buncic had two singles, two runs scored and four stolen bases to lead the Masontown attack. Brian O’Neil, Ryan Jenkins, Craig Hriblan and Josh Franks all had two hits for the winners.

Sam Klinefelter and Bob Gallinski both had two hits for Waynesburg (1-1).

Colonial 7, Perryopolis 5 – Matt Rechichar’s three doubles led an 11-hit attack for Colonial in the visitor’s opening victory of the Fayette American Legion season.

Perryopolis (0-2) led 3-1 after four innings, but Colonial (1-0) scored six runs in the final three innings for a 7-4 lead. Perryopolis rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Chad Rice, Jason Rechichar and Nathan Lewis all doubled for Colonial. Bill Gabonay contributed two singles to the winning effort.
