Cal U to conduct 2002 Alumni Weekend
California University of Pennsylvania will conduct its 2002 Alumni Weekend from May 31 through June 3 with a wide variety of events. On Friday, May 31, the check in process will run from 12 to 10 p.m. at Clyde Hall on the Cal U campus or at local motels that are used. Two events will take place that evening.
At 6 p.m., the Pioneers Reception and Dinner will take place at the Performance Center in the Natali Student Union. All graduates celebrating 50 or more years since graduation will be recognized. Special recognition and the awarding of the Pioneers Medallions will be presented to the Class of 1952. Dr. Ellen Michael and the Cal U choir will provide entertainment. All alumni regardless of graduation year and their guests are welcome to attend.
Friday night’s activities will also feature a trip to the Washington Wild Things’ baseball game at 7 p.m. at newly constructed Falconi Field in Washington.
The Natali Student Center will remain the major activity center for the daytime hours on Saturday, June 1. Registration will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Performance Center lobby and the Alumni Association Annual Meeting will take place from 8 to 9 a.m. in room 206.
The President’s Address and Reception will follow the annual Alumni Association meeting and take place in the Performance Center at 9:30 a.m. when university President Dr. Angelo Armenti Jr. will give an update of the state of the university, including a progress report in the new Kara Alumni House.
At 11 a.m., the Alumni Memorial Service will take place at the Vulcan Theatre inside the Natali Student Center. The Alumni Awards Luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Performance Center with the Alumni Association Award Presentations following the meal. Cost of the meal is $10 per person.

The John R. Gregg Award is presented to an individual who has given dedicated and loyal service to the Alumni Association and California University – Richard J. Majernik (class of 1955).
The C.B. Wilson Distinguished Faculty Award is presented to an outstanding member of the faculty, administration or staff at Cal U. The individual honored may be a current or prior member of the Cal U faculty – Dr. Annette M. Kaleita (class of 1955).
The W.S. Jackman Award of Distinction is presented to a graduate who has gained regional, state, national or international recognition in his or her chosen profession – Jerome R. Salandro (class of 1970).
The Professional Excellence Award is presented to a graduate who has earned the highest standards in his or her chosen profession – Teresa J. Dunn (class of 1980).
The Michael Duda Award for Athletic Achievement is presented to an alumnus or alumna that has distinguished themselves in athletics or an athletic-related activity during their career – Matthew J. Kluck (class of 1979).
The Pavlak/Shutsy Special Service Award is presented to an individual in recognition of his or her untiring efforts and dedication to serve the entire university family – Stephen V. Russell (class of 1970).
The Young Alumni Award is presented to a recent graduate who has reached exceptional achievements in their professional and community life – Paul L. Lancaster III (class of 1995).
The Meritorious Award is presented for outstanding accomplishment in a professional field – Terry R. Basehore (class of 1978).
Class reunion photographs will be taken at 2 p.m. in room 206 of Natali and Campus Tours will begin at 3 p.m. at the Natali Student Center Lobby.
Meanwhile, the 10th Annual President’s Gala, hosted by Armenti and his wife, Barbara, will take place June 1 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, beginning with the 6 p.m. reception and dinner and dancing at 7 p.m. All proceeds raised from the Gala benefit both the Alumni Scholarship Fund and the Faculty Scholarship Fund.
On Monday, June 3, the 21st Annual Cal U Golf Outing will take place at the Nemacolin Woodlands’ Mystic Rock course located in Farmington. Cost is $150 per golfer.
