Housing aid available
The Housing Assistance Program (HAP) at Fayette County Community Action Agency provides rental assistance that can help people with rent, security deposits, or with utility bills that if unpaid would cause eviction.
This program was developed to provide assistance to individuals and families in homeless or near homeless situations.
The HAP program can help families who are attempting to maintain a long-term residence or those who are seeking new housing. Residents of public or private, subsidized and unsubsidized housing are all eligible to receive assistance.
“The HAP program is important in Fayette County because it recognizes and addresses the needs of individuals who are faced with housing issues caused by a broad range of circumstances.
These circumstances may include reduced employment or income, fire or natural disaster, medical expenses, or other personal or external burdens,” said HAP Project Manager Cynthia Dias.
“Many working families in Fayette County are not aware of the money that is available,” Dias continues.
“Also many people may not realize that living in a residence with other family members or friends is considered ‘doubled-up’ and that a person in this situation would qualify for this assistance.”
There are maximum income guidelines for the HAP program, however, these limits are relatively high and it is estimated that 40 percent of tenants in Fayette County will qualify for assistance.
Anyone who is homeless, facing eviction, or living in a doubled-up housing situation should contact Dias at Fayette County Community Action Agency at 724-437-6050, extension 212.
