NAACP community breakfast is set
The Fayette County branch of the NAACP will be holding its first Community Appreciation and Recognition Day breakfast Saturday June 8, at 10 a.m. at the Youghiogheny Western Baptist Association on Route 21. NAACP officials said the purpose of the breakfast is to recognize and acknowledge those individuals who are striving to make a difference in our community. They added that the NAACP would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate those who are taking positive steps to achieve their goals and dreams by honoring the Uniontown Boys High School Basketball team along with this year’s recipients of the Dr. F.L. Vaughn Memorial Scholarship Fund presented for academic achievement.
Several local community leaders who have also personally given of their time providing children with role models in leadership and commitment will also be honored. These individuals are former Uniontown High School basketball coaches, David Shuck and Richard Bierbower and the Rev. Robert Crabel, the Rev. Vincent Winfrey and Calvin Winfrey
The guest speaker will be Dr. Dana D. Brooks, dean and professor of physical education at West Virginia University.

Brooks is well established in the areas of sports sociology and physical education. He co-authored or co-edited three books and six book chapters on the subjects of African American Athlete and Coaching Experiences in College Athletics. He has made more than 70 professional presentations as the state, regional, national and international levels. His presentations were delivered at the Olympic Scientific Congress, AAHPERD National Convention, North American Society for the Sociology of Sports, College and University Administrators Council Meeting, North Central Sociology Association Meeting, ICHPER SD World Congress, Black Coaches Association Annual Convention, Ball State University, University of Michigan and Midwest AAHPERD Annual Conventions.
Brooks has chaired five doctoral dissertations and served on 47 doctoral committees. He has been president of West Virginia AAHPERD (1983-84), president of the Midwest District AAHPERD (1993-95) two years), Midwest District AAHPERD representative to AAHPERD board of governors (1996-present) and editorial board, Journal of Social Issues (1992-97).
He has been honored as the School of Physical Education Outstanding Teaching Award on five separate occasions; the Outstanding Service Award; the West Virginia University Social Justice Award for his advocacy for social justice on campus; the Martin Luther King Jr., Achievement Award; Midwest District AAHPERD Presidential Citation (1999); WVU Center for Black Culture and Research Check and Drop Award for Outstanding African-Centered Research and Scholarship; Fellow American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education; and Dean’s Recognition Award for the College of Health Professions.
He also is presently teaching undergraduate and graduate courses at WVU.
