In addition, the building code has opened up a brand new job market. “This is a tremendous opportunity for displaced mineworkers, steelworkers or factory workers who have lost their jobs,” Smith said.

For $1,500 plus the cost of books and materials, an individual can be well on their way to becoming a certified building inspector. Smith said depending on the community, a certified building inspector can earn anywhere from $18 to $35 an hour.

“There are 16 people in class right now. Ten have been offered jobs and some guys have not even passed their certification yet,”

For Monack, becoming a certified building inspector means that he will have a supplemental income when he retires from the police department and it provides Washington Township with an in-house inspector.

“It will save the taxpayers money because the township won’t have to contract these services out,” Monack said.
