AG plans commencement exercises

Albert Gallatin Area High School will hold its commencement exercise at 7 p.m. Thursday at the high school gymnasium. The senior video will be shown at 6:15 p.m. The valedictorian for the class of 2002 is Mark Cody Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Smith of Point Marion.

Smith’s scholastic honors and awards include four Presidential Awards for Academic Excellence, National Honor Society, National English Merit Award, United States Navy Science Achievement Award, Science Olympiad Excellence Award, Exchange Club Academic Award, American Legion Award and JETS/Teams Regional Winners for 2002. Among other awards, he has been named to the National Honor Roll, All-American Scholar Award, Outstanding Students of America and Silver and Black Merit Awards for honors biology and algebra II.

His extracurricular activities and clubs include Math Team, SADD, Young Astronauts Club, student tutoring, Chess Club, stage and sound crew, Upward Bound, Science Olympiad, JETS/Teams Competition, member of the Lions Club and completed courses at Charity Baptist Bible Institute.

Upon graduation, he will attend Washington and Jefferson College where he will major in biology and minor in chemistry in the pre-med program. His career goal is to become a pediatrician.

The salutatorian for the class of 2002 is Neil Bryner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Bryner of Smithfield.

Bryner’s scholastic honors and awards include The Bausch and Lomb Award for Chemistry, Penn State Honors Program, National Honor Society, Smithfield Rotary Student of the Month, Golden Eagle Award, Italian Open Scholarship and Fine Arts Drama Award. He was selected as Masontown Exchange Club Student of the Semester, a University of Pittsburgh Scholar and was awarded the Valley Forge Christian College Music Scholarship.

His extracurricular activities and clubs include the Interact Club, band, Ski Club, Publicity Club, Student Council and Youth Alive Bible Club. He is active in his church, Faith Assembly of God, where he is a Worship Team member. He is a volunteer for the Salvation Army and Feed the Need volunteer. He also works part time at the Fairchance Pharmacy.

Upon graduation, he will attend the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg in the pre-pharmacy program. His career goal is to continue onto medical school to become an anesthesiologist.
