LH to hold commencement ceremony
Laurel Highlands High School will graduate 244 seniors during ceremonies today in the high school auditorium. The senior video is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and graduation will take place at 7 p.m. Admission is by ticket only.
The class valedictorian is the late Tylar Andaloro of Hopwood. Salutatorian is Elizabeth Garbutt of Uniontown. Spanish teacher Anita Abbott will accept the valedictorian award on behalf of Andaloro.
Andaloro’s awards included Rotary Club student of the month, student of the month for many various subjects, the freshman record for discus and first in the region and seventh in Pennsylvania for the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) competition.
Among her activities, Andaloro participated in track and field, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Interact club, math club, Spanish club, ecology club, homecoming decorating committee, powderpuff football, gifted program, office aide, Mount St. Macrina tour guide, Sun Laurel softball, basketball coach for Kennedy Elementary School, JETS, chemistry Olympics, National Honor Society and Young Inspirations.
Among Garbutt’s awards are Rotary Club student of the month, National Merit Commended Student and basketball, for which she was a four-year letter winner and included in all-county and all-section teams. Garbutt has been active with varsity basketball (captain), National Honor Society, Interact club, the gifted program, Junior Achievement, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Spanish club, peer mediation and Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS).
She has participated in various church activities and community service, including work as a volunteer elementary girls basketball coach and at Mount St. Macrina, as well as tutor for “at-risk” elementary students.
She also has served as captain of the AAV summer traveling basketball team.
Class president Sean Sumey will speak during the ceremony. Senior Gerald Rogers will offer the invocation, and senior Amber Lilley will give the benediction.
