Langham ties record at Kemper POTOMAC, Md. (AP) – Franklin Langham, trying to become the Kemper Open’s fourth straight first-time PGA Tour winner, matched the course record with an 8-under-par 63 on Thursday.
Langham, who just missed a birdie putt on the final hole, had a two-stroke lead over Bob Estes and was three in ahead of Chris DiMarco, Brian Watts, Jay Williamson, Willie Wood and Brian Gay.
Greg Norman, winless in five years, opened with a 67 on the TPC at Avenel. Defending champion Frank Lickliter shot a 70.
Langham’s 63 also tied his personal tour best. He has had three career second-place finishes, including a tie for second at the Kemper two years ago.
Masters
WOBURN, England – Colin Montgomerie, playing despite a back injury, shot a 2-under-par 70 in windy conditions to fall five stroke behind in the British Masters.
Montgomerie, who was cleared to play in the U.S. Open after doctors determined he won’t need surgery on his ailing back, is coming off consecutive second-place finishes. He lost to Tiger Woods on the third hold of a playoff at the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open on May 13 and tied for second last week in the Volvo PGA.
Santiago Luna of Spain and Robert-Jan Derksen of the Netherlands shared the first-round lead at 5-under 67. Defending champion Thomas Levet of France was in a group at 68.
