Joseph D. Butalla, 77, of Carmichaels, Pa., died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., unexpectedly. He was a retired coal miner from Robena Mine with 40 years of service.

Surviving are his wife, Leona M. Stiehm Butalla, whom he married on Feb. 20, 1954. Also surviving are the following children, Franz Butalla and wife, Helen of Greensboro, Pa., Eugena Andreone and husband, Edward of Cranberry Township, Pa., Levida Rice and husband, Mark of Beaver, Pa., and David and wife, Karen Butalla of North Huntingdon, Pa.; four grandchildren, Brianna Riggi, Lauren Morgan and Natalie Rice and one step-granddaughter, Kristin Machesky; and the following brothers and sisters, Stephen Butalla of Englewood, Fla., Pauline Gostyla of Clifton, N.J., Paul Butalla of Killen, Ala., Justina. Franklin of Nashville, Tenn., and Helen Mirikatani of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Paul M. Lesako Funeral Home Inc., Carmichaels, and will be announced.
