Advisory issued

Motorists may encounter minor traffic delays while traveling on High Street in Waynesburg this Monday through Friday, weather permitting.

PennDOT will remove the existing wheelchair ramps on both ends of Freedom Bridge and replace them with longer sloped ramps. The project begins at the intersection of High Street next to Rite Aid and proceeds into Waynesburg near the 7-Eleven mini market. Traffic flow will be maintained as is through this area. Because crews will work in the street, lanes may be slightly compressed. Some minor delays may occur while concrete is delivered for the ramps.

Fund-raiser planned

Greene County Habitat for Humanity will hold a pancake breakfast Saturday, Nov. 23, from 7 to 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Waynesburg. The breakfast costs $5, and all proceeds will benefit the local Habitat affiliate. For more information, call 724-852-3272.

Workshop scheduled

Greene County Cooperative Extension, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, will offer a free deer meat safety workshop Thursday at 7 p.m. at the East Franklin Grange Hall, Waynesburg.

To reduce the risk of food-borne illness, hunters need to handle, process and prepare deer properly, being careful to prevent contamination from the field to the table, according to Carolyn Wissenbach, family living agent with Cooperative Extension.

“Proper cooling techniques that start in the field and continue through processing are necessary to prevent harmful bacteria from building,” Wissenbach said, noting that many people don’t realize that transporting the deer on the hood of their car only increases the risk of spoilage.

Hands-on demonstrations will include proper field dressing, what to look for when dressing a deer, how to make beef jerky safely, and food preservation methods. Participants can register by calling the extension office at 724-627-3745. Those with disabilities who need any type of accommodation or have questions about the physical access provided should call the extension office in advance.

Author to visit

The Brownsville Area School District Title I Parent Advisory Council is sponsoring a presentation for parents, students, teachers, administrators and board members by widely acclaimed children’s author Marc Harshman.

The presentation will be held in the cafeteria of the Cox-Donahey Elementary School at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Harshman was born in Indiana and resides in West Virginia. Until a few years ago, he taught fifth and sixth grades at a three-room country school in West Virginia. He is the author of 10 picture books for children and is also a poet and storyteller.

He has published children’s books in Spanish, Danish and Swedish. Harshman is the recipient of many awards and was named the West Virginia state English teacher of the year in 1995.

The Parent Advisory Council members, along with its president, Richard Frisco, and chairwoman of the presentation, Teresa Shumar, encourage parents and students to attend this session.

The Parent Advisory Council, through Federal Programs coordinator John Joseph, conducts many activities throughout the school year that benefit Title I students in the three elementary schools. They provide supplementary materials and supplies to children in these buildings to use at home with parental involvement.
