Damaged sewer line draws residents’ ire
FAYETTE CITY – Council members said Monday that residents have voiced concern about a damaged sewage line in Fayette City. President James Eley said the line was on Forth Street, near the Union Street intersection, and residents have complained of leakage and a foul odor coming from the area.
The main concern is that if the temperatures drop to freezing, there will be a sheet of ice on the road. Eley announced at the council meeting that they were aware of the problem.
“We are working on repairing it now,” said Eley, adding that it would be completed as soon as possible.
Eley also told citizens that Donegal Construction has started work on the paving project that the council hired them for after their last meeting.
“Unfortunately, the weather has caused a bit of a delay for them,” said Eley. “If all goes well, they will begin putting binder on the streets that need it within the next week.”
In other matters, the contract that council had with animal control officer Fred Moran has expired, and Eley told board members that he had sent forms for contract renewal.
“I think that Fred has done a good job,” Eley commented.
As the rest of the board seemed to agree, they carried a motion to renew the contract, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2003, and continue until Jan. 1, 2005.
The council also voted to end the probation period of police officer Robert Dorcon, who started working for the community one year ago.
“We’re very happy with everything he has done,” said Mayor Herb Vargo.
Eley asked Dorcon to “keep up the good work.”
The council named Brownsville Ambulance service the town’s secondary ambulance service provider. “I’ll notify the proper authorities about it and provide the ambulance with a map of the streets here,” said Eley.
The council will have its next regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 9, at 6:30 p.m., and members will hold a budget meeting on Monday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
