Route 166 crash kills 1, injures 3
NEW GENEVA – A one-car crash along Route 166 Wednesday evening claimed the life of one man and left three other people injured. The man was dead at the scene, according to Fayette County Deputy Coroner Bob Furin. Furin was unable to release the victim’s name until notification of the next of kin.
Furin said all four people were inside the car but information was not available on the extent of injuries to the others.
State police Trooper Steven Walters, who is investigating the incident, said no other vehicles were involved. He said he could only confirm that one person was pronounced dead at the scene and would release a report later.
Point Marion Volunteer Fire Department responded to the site of the accident along the New Geneva Bridge over Georges Creek.
Emergency personnel said the car had been travelling west on Route 166 toward New Geneva. It came to rest with the driver’s side into the corner of the bridge abutment in the opposite lane.
Point Marion Fire Chief Gary Ganoe said firefighters cut the roof and a door off the wreckage to remove the victim, another man, a girl and a young girl from the car.
The Point Marion department with assistance from Smithfield firefighters set up a landing zone at nearby Albert Gallatin South Middle School. Ganoe said one person was flown from the scene by emergency helicopter. He said the two others were taken from the scene by ambulances.
Point Marion, EMS Southwest Inc. and Fairchance ambulances responded.
Fayette County 911 emergency dispatch center logged in the call at 4:50 p.m. and the last responders cleared the scene at 8:33 p.m.
Firefighters rerouted traffic, closing Route 166 between Fallen Timbers and Tomcat Hollow roads.
