Holocaust drama, erotic thriller to light up theaters on Veterans Day weekend

The motion pictures opening this week at a theater near you include: – “All or Nothing”: After living together for years in a faceless South London housing complex, a poor couple – a taxi driver (Timothy Spall of “Topsy-Turvy”) and a supermarket clerk (Lesley Manville of “Secrets and Lies”) – face a quickly deteriorating relationship. They then find themselves emotionally and romantically reconnecting following a numbing tragedy. British filmmaker Mike Leigh (“Naked”) directed the R-rated ensemble drama.

– “8 Mile”: After winning the MTV award for best male video for “Without Me,” rapper-turned-actor Eminem seems ready to take on Hollywood. Rather than make a simplistic action picture, the 30-year-old performer (real name Marshall Mathers) decided to appear in this R-rated semiautobiographical tale about a young Detroit factory worker who hopes to leave emotional troubles behind by participating in a freestyle rap competition in an underground club. Kim Basinger (“I Dreamed of Africa”) plays his mom, while Brittany Murphy, who enjoyed strong reviews in “Don’t Say a Word” with Michael Douglas and “Riding in Cars With Boys” with Drew Barrymore, portrays the neighborhood girl with the power to inspire him to follow the right path.

– “Femme Fatale”: A sexy con artist (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos of “X-Men”) working in France swindles her partners in crime by stealing a diamond-studded blouse and not cutting them in for their share of the loot. She then creates a new identity, marries an ambassador (Antonio Banderas of “Frida”) and moves to America. Her life begins to unravel when the government names her husband to a post in France and her old criminal cohorts stalk her and seek revenge. Peter Coyote (“E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial”) and Greg Henry (“Payback”) co-star, and supermodel Rie Rasmussen makes her big-screen debut in the sexually charged R-rated thriller. Brian De Palma (“Scarface”) directed.

– “The Grey Zone”: Based on actual events, this unsettling R-rated film looks at Jewish concentration-camp prisoners who agree to work for the Nazis by helping to prepare fellow Jews for gas-chamber extermination in exchange for a few extra weeks of life. They eventually mount the only armed revolt that ever took place at Auschwitz. Mira Sorvino (“Mighty Aphrodite”), David Arquette (“Scream”), Harvey Keitel (“Reservoir Dogs”), Natasha Lyonne (“American Pie”) and Steve Buscemi (“Ghost World”) co-star. Tim Blake Nelson (“O”) wrote and directed.

– “Just a Kiss”: Modern romance gets a surreal twist in this R-rated ensemble comedy that involves the flirtatious relationship between two couples and the outlandish, potentially catastrophic results of their actions. Kyra Sedgwick (“Phenomenon”), Taye Diggs (“Brown Sugar”), Marisa Tomei (“In the Bedroom”), Marley Shelton (“Pleasantville”), Ron Eldard (“Black Hawk Down”) and stage legend Zoe Caldwell (“The Purple Rose of Cairo”) co-star. Actor-turned-filmmaker Fisher Stevens made his directing debut.

– “Real Women Have Curves”: Based on Josefina Lopez’s play, this coming-of-age comedy drama follows the lives of some hard-working Hispanic immigrants in East Los Angeles. The plot focuses on a full-bodied 18-year-old (America Ferrera) as she graduates from high school and struggles with the idea of attending college or working in a dress factory to help support her family.
