Deputy arrested

Charges of criminal attempt theft and official oppression were filed Wednesday against Washington County Deputy Sheriff Paulette Benard, 48, at the office of District Justice J. Albert Spence. The charges stem from an incident on April 16 at the front-door metal detector at the courthouse. They were filed following a joint criminal investigation by Washington City Police and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. Benard has been suspected without pay.

Vehicle stolen

State police said David Lee Ansel of Masontown parked his white 1999 Ford Explorer at the woods just off Lambert Hollow Road and Route 166 Sunday and someone stole the vehicle while Ansel was away from it from about 3:50 to 6 p.m. State police listed the vehicle registration as EMJ1179 and asked that anyone with information call the state police station in Uniontown at 724-439-7111.

Man charged

State police charged Larry Franklin Shaw Jr. with aggravated assault, alleging Shaw twice drove down the street in a sport utility vehicle and dragged his girlfriend with her hands caught in the vehicle’s window. Police did not identify the victim. Police said the alleged incident occurred outside Shaw’s residence at 706 Surry Hill Road, Surry Hill Apartments, Oct. 16 around 1:30 p.m.

Man injured

Jeffrey M. Lynn of 11011/2 Springfield Pike, Connellsville, was flown to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh after he was thrown from his truck during a 4:45 p.m. Wednesday accident on Route 119, state police in Uniontown said. Police said they don’t know why his 1999 Ford Bronco left the road at the Everson exit, but it traveled about 100 yards off the shoulder before stopping. The driver was not using a seat belt and was ejected from the truck, police said. A report on his condition was not available from the hospital.

Warrant arrest

Jerome Hopes, 32, of 81 S. Gallatin Ave., was arrested on warrant for drug possession charges issued by Baltimore County, Md., following a traffic stop at 12:05 a.m. Thursday, city police said. He was a passenger in a car that was pulled over for running a red light at the five corners intersection. He was arraigned by District Justice Jesse Cramer and committed to the Fayette County Prison in lieu of $2,500 straight cash bail.

Burglary investigated

Harry Bailey of 25 Edgemont Drive told city police he was gone for about 10 minutes Wednesday and returned at 8:40 p.m. to discover that someone kicked in his front door. Reported stolen was a.22-caliber Winchester bolt-action rifle, 19-inch Sharp television, Daisy Red Ryder BB gun and some change. Police said the incident is under investigation.

Break-in reported

City police said a basement door on a house at 41 Clark St. was discovered kicked in 6 p.m. Wednesday. Landlord Debra Derosa told police the house was vacant and nothing was missing.

Wallet stolen

State police said a black male in his 30s stole 66-year-old Norma Wilde’s wallet from the purse she was carrying while shopping in the Giant Eagle at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday. The incident occurred in aisle 26 near the toothpaste. The suspect is described as 5-feet-8-inches tall, 200 pounds with a very dark complexion. He was wearing a shiny black “Puffy” jacket, dark pants, black cap was carrying a black duffel bag. Police ask anybody with information about the suspect to call the station at 724-439-7111.

ATV stolen

State police a red and black 1999 Honda ATV owned by Charles D. O’Neal, 38, of Mount Pleasant was stolen Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

North Union Twp.

DUI charged

Driving-under-the-influence charges were filed against Roy Barnhart, 56, of Mount Pleasant after he failed to negotiate a curve on Route 119 and hit a guard rail on Oct. 12, state police said. He was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered moderate injuries.

Man arrested

Carl Robert Yauger, 53, of 95 Park Ave., was arrested on a Fayette County bench warrant issued in 1986, city police said. He was arrested at his home, where police were dispatched because of a hang-up call to 911 at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday. Police the warrant was issued under his middle name.
