Perry Township supervisors delay budget action
PERRY TWP – During a brief meeting Tuesday, township supervisors tabled the approval of the 2003 budget until their December meeting because of problems involving the township’s workmen’s compensation provider. Chairwoman Janet Galla told the township that because of the high incidence of compensation claims by the township, the insurance provider, Selective Insurance, has dropped coverage for the township.
“Due to so many claims the past five or six years, they are not going to renew us,” said Supervisor A.J. Boni.
Last month, supervisors passed a tentative $545,500 budget for 2003.
In other business, Galla told the supervisors that she is working on a spreadsheet to streamline the payment of bills and to help budget township workers’ time.
She also requested that the supervisors explore the option of creating a non-paying position for a project manager to help designate work areas and times for the township.
“With this the residents could see that there is a plan for the whole week,” Galla said. The supervisors decided to hold any action on the new position until they could consult with supervisor Adam Muccioli who was not present at the meeting.
The supervisors also conducted the following business:
– Heard from state police trooper Brian Burden about establishing a community crime watch program in the township to help residents take a proactive stance against crime in the area. Burden told the supervisors that he would need someone willing to organize community support and then a meeting to proceed could be scheduled.
– Accepted the resignation of secretary/treasurer Cheryl Bozek effective Oct. 31.
– Appointed Rebecca Gherra as the new secretary/treasurer at a rate of $8 an hour for 30 hours a week.
– Responded to residents complaints about dumping along township roads. Supervisor Boni said that he would contact the Pennsylvania Cleanways program about helping keep the streets clean.
