John L. “Jack” Andrews
John L. “Jack” Andrews, 91, of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Uniontown, Pa., died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at home. He was born July 14, 1911, in Monessen, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sophia Daniels Andrews; a brother, Steven Onderko; and two sisters, Martha Bethem and Mildred Hutchison.
Jack attended Westminster College and the University of Pittsburgh. He was a graduate of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy Class of 1933. He served with the State Liquor Control Board and with PennDOT in the Right of Way Division. A gifted violinist and tenor, Jack had a seven-piece orchestra, The Paramounts, which played in the Mon Valley and on local radio stations in the 1930’s. He held a Real Estate Broker’s License and was a member of the Fayette Board of Realtors, The International Right of Way Association, a life member of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1344 of Brownsville, and a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Albert Gallatin Assembly. He was an active member of PennDOT Retirees and AFSCME-Retiree member. He was also a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church of Uniontown, where he led a boy scout troop for many years.
He is survived by daughters, Rosalind Andrews and her husband, Joseph Seiverd and Pamela Phipps and husband, Don of New Port Richey, Fla.; a son, J. Damon Andrews and wife, Linda of Markleysburg, Pa.; a granddaughter, Melissa Nisbett and husband, Lt. Commander Thad Nisbett; a great-granddaughter, Darby A. Nisbett; a brother, Andrew Onderko of Monessen, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received in the HAKY FUNERAL HOMES INC., A Dignity Memorial Provider, 139 West Fayette St., Uniontown, today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and until 9 a.m., on Friday, when prayers will be said, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9:30 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Uniontown, with the Rev. Fr. William J. Kiel as celebrant. Interment to follow in Mount St. Macrina Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Pennsylvania State Police Children’s Gift Fund, C/O Uniontown Barracks or St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church of Uniontown. “And we shall not see his like again”. A Parish Wake will be held today at 3 p.m., in the funeral home. The Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Albert Gallatin Assembly will have an Honor Guard today from 7 to 8 p.m., in the funeral home.
